We, here at Abigail's Inn, strive to minimize the environmental footprint that our business and lifestyles impart on the environment. We do and will continue to identify materials and/or processes that are harmful to the environment and then work diligently to remove them from our daily operations.

When purchasing appliances/materials used in our business, we consider the following factors in our buying decision:

  1. Is the product safe to the environment -bio-degradable, non-toxic?
  2. Does the product/appliance utilize energy in an efficient manner? Either Energy Star rating and/or demonstrate appropriate efficiency/sizing in meeting need?
  3. Is the product/appliance durable - with the intent on long utilization life / low maintenance requirements / low probability of early retirement and/or disposal?
  4. Purchase of products in bulk or concentrates to reduce package pollution? Can the packaging be recycled?

Lastly, we strive to maximize our efforts to recycle and minimize waste. We use natural cotton cleaning rags, primarily from end-of-life towels and linens. We collect all domestic waste products from customer use and personal use and provide transport and disposal through local waste collection service. We ask that our guests utilize the recycle bins in the guest bathrooms. For us and our employees, we ask the same, and have recycle bins located in our working area and collection area in our barn. Items to recycle:

  1. All paper products - newspaper, magazine, package wrapping/tissue paper, paper bags, cardboard; except products soiled with food residue or human waste residue
  2. All plastic products - drink containers, food containers, personal hygiene products (soaps, shampoos, ...)
  3. All glass products - primarily, food/drink containers
  4. All metal products - primarily, aluminum/steel food containers
  5. Hazardous items, especially those containing mercury - CFL lightbulbs, old fire/smoke alarms, rechargeable batteries, .

We continue to follow a policy of 'multi-use' before retirement/disposal. When a product or appliance has reached end-of-life, we attempt to donate to charity (primarily - Salvation Army in Rockland or Camden/Rockport Animal Rescue League), deliver for salvage, or attempt to re-use in another fashion if possible, before disposing.

Please help us by supporting this policy, and please feel free to ask us if you have any questions regarding the policy and its execution.

Thank you, Beth and Kipp
